The Question Everybody Asks First

"Florida Doesn't Require a Permit Anymore. Why Bother?"

Fair question. Here's the honest answer.

Florida allows qualifying adults to carry concealed without a license. That changed nothing about the reasons people still get one.

It travels. Dozens of other states honor a Florida license. Without one, you can only carry in states that don't require a permit at all — and those rules change from state to state.

It lasts. A Florida license runs seven years before renewal, issued through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

It's proof you were trained. Carrying legally and carrying competently are two different things. The second one is what the class is actually for.

It skips the wait. License holders are exempt from Florida's three-day waiting period when buying a handgun.

Start to License

Three Steps. That's the Whole Process.

STEP ONE

Reserve Your Seat

Pay once online and pick the Saturday that works for you. You'll get everything you need to join the live class.

STEP TWO

Join the Class From Home

Log in live from your phone or laptop on your Saturday morning, 9 AM to 1 PM. Michael teaches it live, so you can ask questions as you go.

STEP THREE

Shoot Your Certification

After class, book your live-fire session at a range near you and complete it in person with Michael. You leave with your certificate of competency in hand.

After the Class

The Part Almost Everyone Skips

Most people take a class once and never touch the subject again. The ones who stay sharp keep showing up — that's what Wednesday nights are for.

Every Wednesday night Michael goes live. Florida law, real incidents broken down, gear questions, mindset, technique — and you can ask him anything while he's on.

It's free, and it runs inside the Stop The Threat community, where you'll find announcements and the questions other people are asking.

Who You're Training With

Michael Dorety

Michael is an NRA-Certified Firearms Instructor with more than 15 years of teaching behind him, and decades spent protecting people, property and facilities. He spent that career protecting people who weren't wearing a badge — exactly the position his students are in.

He teaches the way he'd want to be taught: plainly, without theatrics, and without making anyone feel stupid for asking a beginner's question. His own rule: "By failing to prepare, you're preparing to fail."

He trains across Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte counties, and he founded Stop The Threat in Sarasota.

Before You Book

Questions People Ask

Do I need my own firearm?

Not to take the class. Plenty of students take it before they buy — that's the smart order to do it in. For your live-fire certification, let Michael know when you book that you don't own one yet, and he'll go over your options with you.

How long does the whole thing take?

The class is one live session from home on a Saturday morning, 9 AM to 1 PM. After that, the in-person live-fire certification is a short session at the range that you book separately.

I've never fired a gun in my life. Is this class for me?

Yes. The class assumes no experience whatsoever and starts with how to handle a firearm safely.

Where does the live-fire portion happen?

At a range in Manatee, Sarasota, or Charlotte County. You book your certification session after the class, and your confirmation gives you the exact range and time. The range's own fee is paid to the range on the day.

What does the state license itself cost?

The $110 covers your class and your live-fire certification with Michael. The state application fee and fingerprinting are paid separately to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services — the class walks you through exactly how, step by step.

Do you sell firearms or ammunition?

No. Stop The Threat is a training organization only. Nothing is sold here but instruction.
