Violence in Healthcare, Corporate and Retail Facilities
The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that each year, about two million American workers report having been victims of workplace violence. Workplace violence statistics show that certain industries, like healthcare, corporate and retail environments, are particularly vulnerable.
Here are some key points:
1. Healthcare Facilities
Average Annual Reports of Violent Incidents: Medical facilities in the United States have experienced a notable increase in violent incidents. In 2018, the incidence rate for workplace violence in healthcare was 10.4 per 10,000 full-time workers, significantly higher than the overall rate for all workers, which was 2.1 per 10,000 full-time workers.
This indicates that healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence compared to other professions.
Between 2020 and 2023, the number of reported violent incidents continued to rise, driven by factors such as staffing shortages, patient frustration, and external socio-political issues (Bureau of Labor Statistics) (AAMC) (dir.ca.gov).
2. Corporate environments
Corporate environments also see significant workplace violence. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that in the private industry, over seventy-five percent of workplace homicides in the U.S. occur in the retail trade, followed by healthcare, social assistance, and professional and business services.
3. Types of Violence
Workplace violence can be classified into four types:
- criminal intent
- customer/client
- worker-on-worker
- personal relationship
Worker-on-worker violence is most common in corporate environments, while customer/client violence is predominant in healthcare settings.
4. Preventive Measures
Implementing a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program can significantly reduce incidents. This includes training employees, improving workplace security, and establishing clear policies and procedures for early identification and preventing potential violence.
